Child support and alimony are governed by state law — the same two incomes can produce very different support orders in different states. Choose your state for its specific rules:
Most national calculators apply one generic formula to every state. In reality, about 41 states use the income shares model (both parents' incomes combined, obligation prorated), a handful use percentage of income (a flat percentage of the paying parent's income), and three use the Melson formula. Alimony varies even more — some states have exact statutory formulas, most leave it to judicial discretion guided by factors. Our calculators apply your state's actual model and cite the governing statute on every page.
Every calculator page explains its formula, cites the state statute or court rule it's based on, and links to your state's official calculator where one exists. Results are educational estimates — courts can and do deviate from guidelines. Read our full methodology.
